A process of dividing a hard drive into various sections that are independently accessible.
Partitions are the divisions obtained while formatting a hard disk. For the management of disk partitions, a text-based utility known as fdisk command (format disk or fixed disk) is used.
Fdisk offers the creation of new partitions and organization of old drives. Mkfs, blkid, mount, fsck and tune2fs are also some of the commands available for the creation of a new partition.
