To Install a Unix-like Desktop Operating System PC-BSD 10.2 with Screenshots

In this article we are going to discuss about how to install a Unix-like Desktop Operating System PC-BSD and some basic instructions. It is an open source UNIX-like desktop OS. Its purpose is to make easy and obtainable for user by providing Mate, KDE and as like desktops.

To install PC-BSD 10.2

To install PC-BSD 10.2 we can follow three steps

To download PC-BSD Desktop installer from official PC-BSD website. If you need, you can also download OVA images and boot your VirtualBox application.

Using Unetbootin LiveUSB Creator, create a bootable USB /DVD stick.

Insert the PC-BSD Desktop installer and using DVD or USB, boot the system. After getting the boot screen choose either the text or the graphical based installation. Here for example choose Graphical Install.
So here, I have downloaded the OVA image and going to boot it.
Now starting the virtual machine,
Here, you can choose the Multi-user mode.

To set the desired language

To set the desired language for installation and hit continue to next.

To check whether system hardware is recognized by Installer like sound driver, screen resolution and video driver.

System Configuration

Make the necessary system configuration as follows.

To Start the installation

There you can choose the Desktop or the server to install.

On System Selection screen, select the type of installation you need. Here we select Desktop (PC-BSD), this only install KDE desktop environment. For multiple desktop environments click Customize and select the required desktops.

Next, The Disk Selection will show you default disk configuration, if you need to install only operating system then click next or else click Customize.



To start install


After complete, click finish to reboot the system.

If the default screen resolution is perfect then hit on Yes or else click No to configure.

To set the default language for system

To set Time zone and host name

After setting Time zone and host name and click next to proceed.
Here, I have chosen my country name for Time Zone you can change up to your need.

To set root password

Now the root password is to set.

To crate new account

Next, create a new user account.

To enable IPv6 service and SSH service

If you need to enable the IPv6 service as well as the SSH service, can be done here.

Click on Finish.

Login screen


After installation process complete, choose desktop environment from the login screen.

User-manual exist there, since we are new to PC-BSD you can read or skip.

The control panel as like in windows can be viewed as shown below,

Since I said this is Unix-Linux like operating system we can open the terminal from the icon shown in the left down corner.
