Third-Party App Stores snuck into iOS App Store

Though the iOS ecosystem is considered to be safe and closed as it is constantly monitored by Apple, there are ways to sneak into it amidst the tight control. One such instance of this breach came into light recently due to the efforts of global security giant Trent Micro. The proprietor of at least one third-party app store was found using a new method of subterfuge enabling the store to be legitimately placed inside Apple' s official App Store.

The imposter app was disguised as a household financial helper on the App Store, but in reality it was actually a front for an illegal third-party app store. If downloaded, the app will pretend as though it is an authentic accounting app, but once left open, it will switch views showing the illegal third-party app store.

It is still unclear about who was targeted by the malicious app. The app makes use of Japanese characters, but the app store is written in Mandarin Chinese. Also, this app was found in the app stores of several countries.

Although the fake app has been removed from the iOS App Store, the threat it posed shouldn’ t be forgotten by the apple team. While the said app was functioning, it has distributed a jailbreak app, an app which was already banned by Apple. Also, when things like this happen, there is a possibility to distribute malware in what would otherwise be considered a safe environment.
