DSCP (Differentiated Services Code Points)

DSCP or DiffServ is a networking architecture that specifies a simple, scalable and coarse- grained mechanism for classifying and managing network traffic and providing Quality of Service (QOS) on IP networks mostly on kernel version 2.4. DSCP provides a low latency and higher speed to transfer critical network traffic. The Type Of Service (TOS) field in IpV4 header is the predecessor of 6 bit DSCP and 2 bit Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) field. The DSCP target is able to set any DSCP value inside a TCP packet, which is a way of telling routers the priority of the packet Basically, DSCP is a way of differentiating different services into separate categories, and based on this and gives them different priority through the routers. This gives a network operator great flexibility in defining traffic classes.
