Frequently asked questions ( 5 )

Q

What are some of the Pros and Cons of using Zotero?

A

Pros:
Automatically updates itself to work with new online sources and bibliographic styles.
Great for importing non-traditional references, e.g. wikis and websites.
Cons:
Limited bibliographic styles available.
Requires more maintenance of import records than other programs, e.g. RefWorks or EndNote.

Q

How can I access my Zotero library from multiple computers?

A

Yes, using Sync with the Zotero 2.0 Beta version, although library items and attached files are handled separately:
1.Library items (citations and metadata) can be stored on Zotero's servers if you create a zotero.org account.
2.Attached files (PDFs, images, videos) can be stored using Zotero's File Storage but there is a 100MB limit.

Q

How can Zotero import citations from the Melvyl online catalog?

A

Yes. Zotero allows users to import search results from Melvyl directly.

Q

What's the best format in which to save item titles?

A

The best way to save your book/article/website/etc titles is in sentence case, with proper nouns, etc. capitalized. If you right-click on the title field (also short title field) in your Zotero library you can switch from title case to sentence case (but you will have to manually capitaize proper nouns, etc)

Q

How do I migrate all my old references and PDFs to Zotero?

A

I advise doing it over several nights, no more than two hours at a time. For PDFs, drag them from your computer into the Zotero window.
