Protocol

A protocol is a convention that defines data formatting, data compression and encryption options. There are many types of protocols like Internet Protocols, Wireless Network Protocols, Network Routing Protocols, etc. The most common network protocols are Ethernet, Local Talk, Token Ring, FDDI and ATM. The Internetworking communications use Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP) for transmission of data packets across the network. Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) are also used for network communication. Internet Protocols use HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol).
