 A gateway serves as an entrance zone between two networks of different protocol.  A gateway can either be a router or computer, and can perform a vast amount of tasks. In simple terms, Gateway can be defined as something that connects the user to the internet. In large scale, a gateway can be defined as router that regulates the traffic between a workstation and the network which has all the web resources. Gateway acts as a proxy server and also as a firewall.
