A partition table is a table maintained on disk by the OS describing the partition on the disk. A partition is a fixed size subset of a disk drive which is treated as a unit. Partitions can be created, resized or deleted. All these partition details are maintained in the partition table. There are many types of partition table, GUID partition table is a standard for partition table specially for most Linux distribution and FreeBSD.
