Network Time Protocol is used to synchronize the system clock with a remote server in the Linux distributions. Network Time Protocol can also mitigate the effects of variable network latency. A local NTP server on the network synchronizes the accurate external timing source. The accuracy on the local area networks is better up to one millisecond.
