tar/Tape Archive

The tar command stands for tape archive. The specified command is used to compress several numbers of large files into a single archive file. The files can be compressed in various levels like No compression (.tar), Gzip compression (tar.gz), Bzip2 compression (tar.bz2), Lzip compression, Lzop compression. The real scenario of tar command is to backup servers and desktops distribute software and archive documents.
