Traceroute

Traceroute outputs the route packets that trace to a network host. It prints the route packets by utilizing the IP protocol ‘Time To Live’ field and attempts to revoke an ICMP TIME_EXCEEDED response from the each gateway path to the host. While running the traceoute command, it requires destination host name or IP address as mandatory parameter. The traditional traceroute methods are not always applicable for the modern network environment due to the firewalls. Some additional traceouting methods (uses particular protocol and source or destination port) were used to bypass the firewalls.
