How to configure vMotion in VMware vSphere

The VMware vSphere is a web application that helps in the creation of virtual machines and is repsonsible for better efficiency, performance and availability. The vMotion is a component of VMware vSphere that allows the live migration of a running VM file system from one storage to another. This migration maintains the data integrity. This tutorial covers the configuration procedure of vMotion in VMware vSphere.

Configuration procedure

To start the configuration procedure, first use the vMotion to migrate a VM from one ESXI host to another host. For configuring the vMotion the VM should be installed in a shared storage and it requires VMkernel adapter in both the hosts. Then use the vSphere client software to add the VMkernel adapter.

Select the host and click the configuration tab then click add networking.

The network wizard window appears and then select the VMkernel and click next.

Next, select the already existing vSwitch and click next option.

Now enable the use this port group for vMotion and click next.

Next enter the IP address and subnet mask for the adapter and click finish to create the VMkernel adapter.

The VMkernel adapter has been created for both hosts.

The shared storage shared1 is created using iSCSI and the CentOS VM is installed in this shared storage. The CentOS VM files are as shown below.

Now right click the VM for migration and click migrate option.

Select the ' change compute resource only' migration type.

Select the host for which the VM should be migrated.

Then select the network adapter and click next.

Now select the vMotion priority as high priority.

Click finish option to start the migration process.

Now the user can view the the VM relocation in the recent tasks window.

Now the migration is completed and the user can view the host has changed.

Wasn' t that an easy installation procedure? The vMotion can be used to migrate the data copies the VM' s disk file to new location to preserve the data intergrity when the replication occurs.
