To install Chrome and Chromium in OpenSUSE Leap

Chrome and Chromium is an open source web based browser for Linux systems. It is designed with several features including automatic updates, built-in PDF viewer and Flash player. Installation of Chrome and Chromium Browser in OpenSUSE Leap.

Installation of Chrome browser

Install the chrome package from the repository by using the following command.

Linuxhelp:/home/user1 # zypper ar http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/rpm/stable/x86_64 Google-Chrome

Repository ' Google-Chrome'  successfully added

Once the chrome package is installed, refresh the repository.

linuxhelp:/home/user1 # zypper refresh

Repository ' openSUSE-Leap-42.1-Oss'  is up to date.                                                        
Repository ' openSUSE-Leap-42.1-Update'  is up to date.                                                     
Repository ' openSUSE-Leap-42.1-Update-Non-Oss'  is up to date.                                             
All repositories have been refreshed.


Install the stable version of google chrome with the following command.

linuxhelp:/home/user1 # zypper install google-chrome-stable

Now its time to open the Google chrome browser through the Unity dashboard as shown below.

Installation of Chromium

To install chromium browser, run the following command.

linuxhelp:/home/user1 # zypper install chromium

We want to deploy Google Chrome, but we have legacy applications that don't work in it. What can we do?

To follow the instruction:
1. Update the legacy application to work on modern browsers (if possible)
2. Use Chrome's legacy browser support to enable loading legacy applications in a legacy browser

Google Chrome doesn't work with some of our internal applications. Will you fix this?

*Of course, if you do find issues that are true bugs in Google Chrome (pages crash, it shows web pages differently than Safari, etc.), then please let us know by filing a bug.

*Most of these issues are not actually bugs in Google Chrome -- the applications themselves were written for a specific web browser, and do not handle other browsers properly. You may want to contact whoever administrates those applications and ask about browser compatibility, as Google Chrome cannot fix those issues.

Does Google Chrome install over itself? What if users already have it installed?

1.Google Chrome does not install over itself. It first checks if it is already installed at the same elevation level.

2.However, if Google Chrome is already installed by the user at user-level, installing it system-level will remove the user-level installs and replace them with a system-level install. User/profile data would remain.
