To Install VMware Workstation 11

In this article, we will learn how to install VMWare Workstation 11 on RHEL/CentOS 7. VMWare Workstation 11 is popular software which allows running multiple different virtual machines on physical hosts using the concept of Type II of hyper-visors (Hosted Hyper visors).

  • It also has the feature of creating new desktop shortcuts for VM.

System Requirements

  • System specification &ndash 64 bit.
  • License key to activate the product. It can be used in evaluation mode for 30 days.
  • Root account or non-root user with sudo privileges.
  • Updated system and kernel.

VMware has visualization feature and it does not support 32 bit edition.

To Download VMWare Workstation 11

Login to server as root or non-root user with sudo permissions. Now execute the following commands to update the system.

Now the update process is completed.

From the VMware official site download the software. By default the script file VMware-Workstation-Full-11.0.0-2305329.x86_64.bundle is downloaded without execute permission.

Navigate to the directory which has the script file and check if they have default permissions.

Execute permission should be provided for all.

[root@linuxhelp Desktop]#chmod a+x VMware-Workstation-Full-11.0.0-2305329.x86_64.bundle 

“ for security reasons you may need to give the permission for the owner user only NOT for all” .

Check the permissions again after setting the permission.

To Install VMWare Workstation 11

Run the following script file to install

[root@linuxhelp Desktop]#./VMware-Workstation-Full-11.0.0-2305329.x86_64.bundle 
[sudo] password for user1: 
Extracting VMware Installer...done.

Now the installation process is completed.

Once the script is running, the following window appears.

Just follow the one screen instructions and click next. Installation was successful windows appear.

To run VMWare Workstation 11

Return to the terminal, and install kernel-devel.

[root@linuxhelp Desktop]#yum install kernel-devel

Type VMWare in the terminal to run the software.

[root@linuxhelp Downloads]# vmware

The application starts and home window appears. You can now start working on it.
