KDE is collaborating with Purism to create Linux Smart phone

There are Android smart phones, Apple iPhones, etc. But there is a crowd of people who want a smart phone free of any proprietary code or firmwares. Good news for you people, Purism and KDE are partnering to create the Purism Librem 5 smart phone.

The Librem 5 is designed to be a secure smart phone with privacy protection and it is fully open-source with a GNU/Linux OS. It is likely to be based on Purist’ s PureOS, a Debian Linux- based OS.

A roadblock exists while designing this dream smart phone, the downside is that most smart phones include hardware that requires proprietary software to work. It clashes with the Librem’ s principle of freedom from proprietary software.

" Building a Free Software and privacy-focused smart phone has been a dream of the KDE community for a long time. We created Plasma to not just run on desktops and laptops, but for the whole spectrum of devices," said Lydia Pintscher, president of KDE e.V, in a statement. " Partnering with Purism will allow us to ready Plasma Mobile for the real world and integrate it seamlessly with a commercial device for the first time. The Librem 5 will make Plasma Mobile shine the way it deserves."

This smart phone is being crowd funded right now and so far it has only raised $300,000 of its $1.5 million goal. Hope this pipeline dream will material itself into reality as a tougher competitor for Android an Apple iOS.
